An open letter to the UK design media

Following criticism, Architects Declare have responded with an open letter to the UK design media, supported by Design Declares.

An open letter to the UK design media

Architects Declare (AD) was established in 2019, an expansive and international network of architectural practices committed to addressing the climate and biodiversity emergency within the remit of the architectural industry. With active groups spanning 28 countries as part of the wider Built Environment Declares initiative, AD has nearly 1,300 signatories in the UK alone, rallying support and calling for action both on home turf and further afield.

As co-founders of Design Declares (D!), a community of designers, agencies, and institutions declaring a climate and ecological emergency, we share a common goal with AD, and feel a sense of solidarity in their mission, vision, and ambition for meaningful and enduring change in the face of the climate crisis. We have a kinship, and whilst media criticism might call into question our actions as a global declaration initiative, we respond constructively, working to facilitate a productive outcome that leads to actionable impact for the planet, as well as support and allyship for our communities and wider industries.

Back in April 2023, Dezeen published an article criticising the Architects Declare movement, and in light of this, AD have written an open letter to the UK design media which D! have co-signed. We hope that the UK design media can understand our desire for an open dialogue, one that invites conversation, questioning, and curiosity over criticism.
